Intraoperative Ultrasound

7th February 2020

  • Develop your expertise and improve surgical outcomes maximising the use of intraoperative ultrasound during liver surgery
  • Cadaveric hands-on workshops with ultrasound tuition
  • Lectures reinforced with surgical video footage

The course is free of charge to registered delegates

An intensive one day course focusing on the use of ultrasound during intraoperative liver surgery. A combination of lectures and  workshops with human cadaveric training will reinforce the theory helping participants to develop and improve their operative protocol. Hands-on participation with diagnostic ultrasound equipment offers an opportunity to develop ultrasound technique and technology with tips and tricks to develop the optimal approach. The lectures are reinforced with exclusive surgical video footage of a left hepatectomy, RFA and post-resection procedures delivering an engaging simulation-based learning experience which outline precise identification of liver segments and vessels using B-mode and Doppler ultrasound.

Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) is considered to be one of the most sensitive imaging modalities during hepatic surgery for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.  As the ultrasound transducer is placed directly on to the surface of the liver without any intervening subcutaneous fat, high-resolution frequencies can then be utilized which deliver excellent image quality. Dedicated surgical transducers, such as T-shaped or micro-convex can easily be inserted deeper into the abdominal cavity, allowing the entire liver to be imaged. Overall, ultrasound can help improve the detection, localization and characterization of hepatic tumours in a dynamic, real-time format improving surgical strategy and patient outcome.

Target Audience

The course is aimed at Consultant Surgeons, Registrars and ST7/8 and Post CCT wishing to develop their expertise and improve surgical outcomes maximising the use of intraoperative ultrasound during liver surgery.
